Any
disabled rider wanting to compete in dressage there are several options
open to you. You can compete in classes solely for disabled riders
or you maybe eligible to compete in able-bodied competitions.
To get the sport to grow internationally it is once again for the
local groups to establish dressage as a sport for disabled people.
It is due to enthusiasm and commitment that riders are able to compete
as more and more competitions are organized at local, national,
and international level. Competition opens up new worlds through
travel, contacts with other people and through the fellowship of
a wider community. This applies equally to those who compete, as
it does to all others actively involved.
Para-Equestrian
riders compete in individual and team dressage and develop creative
ways to communicate with their horses such as if they are unable
to give signals with their legs, utilizing a dressage whip or other
aids. In dressage competition, riders perform individually and they
must ride a pattern, which includes various changes in pace and
direction. At the Paralympics, all riders are grouped according
to their functional profiles and they are judged on their ability
to control and maneuver the horse. Prior to the Athens games, athletes
competed on borrowed horses. Now athletes are able to bring their
own horses. Equestrian became a Paralympic Games sport in Atlanta
1996.
